Department

Hematology

The Department of Hematology was established in 1989 when Dr. Yun Gu Kang was appointed as director of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Research Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences, the parent organization of the Korea Cancer Center Hospital, in Jeong-dong, Seodaemun-gu. Since then, the department has been led by competent medical personnel leading hematology in Korea.

The Department of Hematology started providing medical service during the earlier phase of the introduction of stem cell transplantation in Korea by opening the Stem Cell Transplantation Center in 1997. Since 2004, it has been treating numerous patients by conducting clinical trials for intractable lymphoma treatment using radioimmunotherapy based on the independently developed new-concept targeted therapy.

In achieving steady development, it secured a system to help patients receive chemotherapy as outpatients without hospitalization by establishing the Chemotherapy Center in 2005 and opened a hospice ward in May 2012.

Currently, the medical staff at the Department of Hematology consists of five cancer specialists: Director Sung Hyun Yang, Im Il Na, Hye Jin Kang, Hyo Rak Lee, and Yoon Jung Jang. The medical staff provide Korea’s top-tier healthcare service for the treatment of lung cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, head and neck cancer, genitourinary cancer, and other solid tumors.
